What I know about hockey

Oh my, is this an actual post? After so long with nothing? Yeah, I know.

Anyway, on to the subject at hand. What I know about hockey. Before college, everything I knew about hockey came from watching the Mighty Ducks movies. As awesome as those movies are, (especially number 2, I mean come on!) they don't impart a whole lot of actual knowledge. Then came college.

At Utah State, they didn't have an official school hockey team. They had a club hockey team that was extremely popular. When I was a student there, Logan didn't have an ice rink for the team to practice or play on. So everyone would drive down to Ogden to play on Weber State's ice rink. The hockey team was popular enough that every game would be sold out with students driving from Logan to Odgen, and paying to get into the game. School sponsored sports were free with your student id, but you had to pay to get into hockey games. And it was worth it! I had a friend that played hockey in high school and he came with us and enlightened us all about hockey. Thanks to those experiences I now know the following about hockey:
  • I know what icing is
  • I know what offsides is
  • I know that if a fight breaks out, the ref won't break it up until someone is down on the ice
  • I know that if you start a fight with the team's goalie, the whole team will thrash you
  • I know that if a player loses a helmet, glove, or if a stick is broken on the ice, it stays on the ice until the next whistle stops play
  • I know of two different reasons why a team will pull their goalie in the middle of a game
  • And I know that going to a hockey game is a perfect activity for my boys

Steve's company has season tickets to the Grizzlies, and last night we got to use them. It was "kids get in free" night at the hockey game, so we didn't have to buy any additional tickets. It was perfect for my boys. First of all, there was plenty of space. There was only one other person sitting on our row, and nobody in the row in front of us or the row behind us. It was loud, so my boys could be loud also and it didn't bother anybody. Plus, there was never-ending action. Once the puck drops, it's non-stop skating, and shooting, and body-checking. (Another reason my boys liked it.) Kevin got all into it and kept shouting inspiring things like, "Go Grizzlies! You can do it this time! Put the puck in the white team's net!" The other part that they loved was every time the Grizzlies scored, a really loud train horn would sound over the speakers. And you know how my boys love trains. The Grizzlies ended up losing in overtime (we left before that, I looked up the outcome this morning) but it was a fun game.
