The Mouths of Babes

Kevin was in charge of the lesson for family night. He decided he wanted to play his scripture themed folder games as the lesson. As he was doing his Noah’s Ark folder, he was asking his dad about the story of Noah and the Ark. Steve explained to him that all the righteous people and two of every animal had to get on the boat so they would be safe from the flood. Kevin said, “So those mean guys on Ice Age won’t get them, right?” I think he’s seen Ice Age 2 too many times.

Then last Friday, we were in Heber, eating at the Dairy Keen. Since Kevin has never met a public restroom he didn’t like, he of course had to go try this one. I took him in with me and when he was done, I had him wait in the stall with me so I could go. Just as another lady went into the stall next to us, he said, “Mom, do you need any help?” “No, Kevin I’m just fine.” “Mom, I’m going to keep my eye on you so you don’t spill.”

Thanks for the insights, son.

Justification

After the kids go to bed, I really like to just be lazy and watch TV. I usually end up feeling guilty for not being more productive though. Sometimes this inspires me to fold clothes while I’m watching TV. Last week, while I was watching So You Think You Can Dance, I had the inspiration to be productive again. So I spent an hour turning this:

100_0996 Into this:

100_0998It only took a few days for the boys to destroy the organization again, and it only took them that long because I wouldn’t let them play downstairs. But cleaning it up gave me what I felt was a good justification to watch TV for a while. I don’t always try to be productive, but this time it worked.

Weird roomies

For some reason I started thinking today about some of the roommates I had in college. Maybe it was a subconscious effort to remind myself that it could be worse. So I thought I’d share some of my favorite tidbits of living with different roommates through four years of college.

First of all, let me say that I always had one fantastically awesome roommate each year, without whom I never would have made it. The first two years that was my BFF Heather. Heather and I came up with little sayings to help us deal with the roommates we couldn’t handle. The one that I later cross-stitched and framed was “Not everyone thinks the way I do. My way is not the only way.” We meant it in a very facetious manner and would often follow up by saying, “Everyone should think the way I do. My way is the best way.”

The reason for this was our roommate “K” (names have been changed to protect the innocent and not so innocent.) K was great at first, but soon she began doing things that really annoyed us. Our policy was everyone wash your own dishes, and she would leave pans soaking in the sink until they had rusted through. Then she got a boyfriend who was over at our apartment all the time. As in sleeping over. As in using our shower. We put a stop to that really quick. The boyfriend was trying to grow dreadlocks, so she tried to help it along by smearing vegetable oil in his hair. He left a slimy trail wherever he went. He was the reason that Heather and I started saying, “I don’t have to be nice to anyone who doesn’t live here.”

The best day however, was the day that K’s boyfriend agreed to pierce her nose in our bathroom. They bought some kind of home piercing kit and decided to give it a go. Now she didn’t want a nose ring on the side of her nose or anything, she wanted him to pierce it right through the middle, like a bull. It took several tries and her eyes kept tearing up but he finally got it pierced. Then, instead of a regular nose ring she decided it would be so much cooler to get some little nails from the hardware store and stick those through the new hole in her nose.

The most random and weird part of the whole thing for me was the fact that K kept saying that she was planning on going on a mission. We asked her, “What about the nose ring then?” She said that she could just get half a ring to put through her nose so she could flip it inside and no one would be able to see it. Yeah… she was a real thinker. It really bothered me that she was there on a massively huge academic scholarship. She had free tuition for four years, plus an addition $2400 a year for room and board. She messed around so much freshman year that she lost the scholarship, pulled out of school at the end of the year, and moved in with some friends, or so she said. It was definitely an adventure.

The following year wasn’t quite as eventful, although we did have a roommate who would sit in a chair in the living room and peel off her sunburned skin and leave it in a pile on the floor. But that is a different story.

Into the wild blue yonder

Our family loves air shows, so of course we went to the air show last weekend at Hill Air Force Base. It was a long day for everyone, but we all had a great time. Here are some of the highlights. (Please forgive the camera work. I was using my little Kodak digital camera for the pics and the video and sometimes the action was too fast for me.)

These are a couple of the Thunderbirds' signature moves. Sorry about the second one. I was zoomed in and I got a little bumpy.

The boys all got some free plastic airplanes, which was a great distraction during the down times.

One of my favorite things that they do at every air show I've been to is called the heritage flight. They fly airplanes from several eras together. At the airshow this weekend they flew a P-51 Mustang (from World War 2), an F-4 Phantom (from Vietnam), and an F-16 Falcon (currently used). I didn't get a great picture of it, but it was one of the highlights for me.The crowds were intense, but the weather was nice and it was something we all enjoyed. Plus the air show only comes around about once every three years, so we had to take advantage of it while it was here.

Small Comfort

The last few days seem to have been particularly trying with the kids. Maybe I’m just too tired or something, but I’ve gotten that overwhelmed feeling quite often.

Whenever I talk to others about feeling so overwhelmed, I generally hear something along these lines: “This time in their lives won’t last forever. They grow up so fast. Cherish these moments. Some day, you’re going to miss this.” And I know that’s absolutely true. There will come a day when these boys won’t want to talk to me beyond one syllable answers to questions (if that!) and I’ll wish that they were little again.

The only problem I have, is that the kind of advice I seem to be getting doesn’t really give me any specific help for right now. Honestly, it just makes me feel guilty that I’m not cherishing every precious moment. Somehow I need to find a way to enjoy the endless, whiny demands of a sweet little four-year-old and the endless trouble that the twins can get into.

Okay, I’ll admit it. A lot of times, the boys are hilarious! Which is what I try to remember more than the trying times, but the trying times sure seem to be plentiful as well. That being said, the other day I realized that although I won’t miss doing tons of laundry all the time, I will miss the click, click, click sound of the twins laundry in the dryer. Since everything they own is covered in snaps, it has a distinctive sound as it goes around in the dryer. Kevin’s laundry doesn’t make that sound any more.

How ironic of me to complain about the whininess of the kids and then write a very whiny blog entry! However, may I just say, that the one phrase I probably hear the most when I complain to someone is this, “I understand how you feel.”  And perhaps that’s the most helpful.

Kevin post

So a couple weeks ago we got home from church and tried to get everyone down for a nap. The twins were really tired so that was no problem, but Kevin stopped taking naps about a year and a half ago so hopes were not high. He was a little tired though so he started demanding things. "Mommy, I want a blankie.""Mommy, I want a pillow.""Mommy, I want that ghost to come."

What? "What ghost are you talking about, Kev?" I started racking my brain for what movie or TV show he's watched with a ghost in it. He continued his demand, getting more and more insistent and more and more angry that I wasn't fulfilling his every need.

"Mommy, I want that ghost to come and help me. That ghost from church. THE HOLY GHOST!"

I guess he was paying attention in sharing time after all.

Last week, we took him with us to the hospital to visit his new cousin. He took one look at the baby and started looking all over the room. Then he asked, "Where's the other one?" Apparently all babies are supposed to come in a set of two.

Finally, here's some pictures of Kevin catching his first fish. With Grandpa's help of course.
