Reminiscing
About 4 years ago, I was this big:
Flattering picture right? That picture was taken right before the twins were born. The reason I was that big is because I had two regular size babies in me.
Troy was 7 lbs. 8 oz. and Jonathan was 7 lbs. 5 oz. Kevin became a big brother for the first time, and started out with double duty.
We were pretty sure that they were fraternal twins, but I was still worried about them looking so similar that they would be hard to tell apart. My worries were for nothing, because right away it was easy to tell who was Troy and who was Jonathan. Troy’s fluffy red hair was a dead giveaway.
Their smiles in their one-year-old pictures won our hearts:
And at two they loved having a partner in crime :
Even though they seem so happy in pictures:
It certainly hasn’t been all smiles all the time:
This week they started preschool. Next week they’ll turn four years old. It’s amazing looking back at how much they’ve grown and changed. Their personalities have always been so unique, yet they love having a best friend with them wherever they go. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

6-year-old Sunday School Lessons
Lesson Number 1: We were having family night, and Steve was teaching the story of David and Goliath. He used a giant teddy bear as Goliath, and Woody from Toy Story as David. He explained how David was so much smaller but he went out there with his sling, and picked up a stone and hit Goliath right between the eyes. Then he asked, “And do you know how David was able to win the fight, even though he was so much smaller?” Kevin answered, “Because he had that rock!”
Yep, that’s my boy. Always the practical thinker.
Lesson Number 2: I came into Kevin’s bedroom to find him lying on his bed, just looking at the ceiling. Before I could question him, he said, “Mom, do you know why I’m laying here so quietly? I’m listening to my Holy Ghost.” So I said, ok, and let him sit there and listen. He turned his head slightly, and moved his eyes around the room as he listened. Then he said, “I think he’s saying…. get up.” And with that he stood up and moved on to another activity.
That little boy teaches me so many things it’s crazy!

Happy Belated Father’s Day

I'm not as cool as I think I am
However, there is still a lot of contention surrounding the transformer toys. One of the big problems is that one of them in particular is very difficult to transform. So all day, I have one of the boys bringing me the toy and saying, "Make it a jet. Now make it a robot." Again and again. And I've discovered that I'm just not good at it. I pull out the instructions and go step by step and it still only vaguely resembles a jet. This morning I couldn't make the arms fold up the way the picture showed, so I just took them off. They're removable for a reason, right?
Kevin wanted to play with it next so I gave him the jet, the arms, and the instructions and said, "Good luck!" Less than ten minutes later he's playing with a perfectly transformed jet. "How did you do that?" I asked. Then he proceeded to show me. "You just follow the instructions mom," he said. So now when one of the twins wants me to transform their toy, I'm just sending them to Kevin. He's cooler than I am anyway.

On the first day of summer vacation...
- Had a picnic in the backyard
- The twins pretended to be puppies, by using the backyard as a toilet
- Jonathan just did number one, but cleaning up after Troy required a shovel
- Gross, I know
- I wish that somehow it equated to Troy having success on the potty, but no, he had an accident later on in the day
- Jonathan threw a plastic sand toy over the fence to the real dogs who live next door
- As Jonathan says, "Doggies ate my shobel and broke it."
- Well, if you throw something over the fence to the dogs, that's what will happen
- We played a fun game where we had to follow the sound to find the missing cordless phone
- It was outside
- We may try this game again, but hide the phone on purpose this time
- Although that might just be tempting fate
And that was just day one. I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Goin’ on a vole hunt
We have a small garden in our backyard. Every year we plant tomatoes around the perimeter of our yard and plant all kinds of vegetables in our little garden. Last year I didn’t have much success growing bell pepper plants from seeds, so we bought some bell pepper plants instead. In addition to the tomato and bell pepper plants, we planted seeds for cucumbers, beans, yellow crookneck, and zucchini. Steve always says that if he were a starving pioneer back in the day, he would’ve planted zucchini because they grow like noxious weeds around here.
As we were planting, Kevin said he saw a ground hog come up out of a hole. Steve took a look and said, “I think Jonathan dug that hole,” and we both promptly dismissed it. The next day (which was Sunday) Steve came up to me while I was attempting an afternoon nap. He said, “We should have listened to Kevin. There’s a critter in our garden.” I looked out the window, and sure enough, there was a beady-eyed fuzzy poking his head out of a little hole. Two of my four pepper plants were gone too.
We thought that it was probably a gopher of some kind and tried the only thing we could think of to get rid of it. We put the hose down one of the holes and waited by the other one with a shovel. Surely if we flushed it out with the water we could bop it on the head with the shovel as it came out of the other hole. Well, we had the water on full blast for about 40 minutes and nothing came out of any holes. No water, no gopher. It made us wonder where all the water was going. We hoped that maybe it was a particularly stupid gopher and just drowned in his tunnels.
No such luck. About an hour later he was poking his head out of a new hole and my last two pepper plants were gone. After that, the little critter went to ground and we saw no sign of him for two days. My dad told me that it was possible that it was actually a vole, whatever that is. My parents have had them in their yard a few times. Then Tuesday night after we put all the kids to bed, Kevin came upstairs saying that he heard a weird sound outside his window and he thought it was the ground hog. Steve went down to his room to check it out and didn’t hear anything. Just as he was about to leave, he heard a rustling sound outside Kevin’s window. He went outside to check it out, and low and behold, there was the little varmint, down in Kevin’s window well.
After getting a good look at it and comparing it to pictures online, we decided that it was in fact a vole. Apparently they’re sometimes referred to as field mice and they can be one of the most destructive pests in your garden and lawn. Steve had some gopher bait, and he put that down the window well, but we weren’t very optimistic that it would work. After Steve took some pictures of it, he grabbed the shovel. We both thought that the vole would be too fast, but Steve was able to get him with the shovel. After looking up more information on voles (especially one particularly helpful site called getridofthings.com) we decided a few things. One, it was a good thing that we got rid of him. He would continue to eat all of our plants, and we’re lucky that he didn’t destroy our entire lawn. Two, it’s likely that there are more where this one came from. They’re apparently prolific breeders, basically mating all the time and having litters of 4-7 little voles year round.
But now that I know Kevin is basically some kind of divining rod for voles, I’ll just let him spot the next one for me. We’re hoping there won’t be a next one, but if there is, be vewy, vewy, quiet. We’re hunting voles! hahahahahaha

Free Gift?
A few months back we received a magazine in our mailbox that we didn’t sign up for. This is what we saw:
I edited out the rest because this is a family blog and Vanessa Hudgens in her underwear just isn’t family blog appropriate! Anyway, it isn’t a High School Musical star in her skivvies that bothers me. If I was going to start getting a random free magazine, it’s gotta be “Shape”? I’m telling you right now, I’m all for being physically fit and everything, but at this point the only shapes I’m interested in are round. As in pie and cheesecake and pizza. Sad but true. Mmmmmm…. cheesecake. The other weird part is that this magazine isn’t addressed to us, it’s addressed to the person we bought this house from. 5 years ago. I mean, we still occasionally get junk mail for the former owners, but a magazine subscription?
About a month after we started getting our free Shape magazine, we started getting another free magazine. Was it something a little more accurate to our demographic? You tell me:
Yep, we’ve been getting a free subscription to Latina magazine for the last few months. The other weird part is that this is who it’s addressed to:
That’s right. My husband is getting a free subscription to Latina magazine. I find this extremely hilarious. So every month when it arrives, I place it lovingly on his pillow, so he can peruse it at his leisure.Wednesday, February 23, 2011
We have a mystery
Troy has been known to get the juice out himself and bring it to wherever I am, so I asked him where the juice was. His reply, "I dunno. Downstairs?" So I went downstairs and searched. Then I searched his bedroom, then the living room, the laundry room, the bathroom, and I even went out into the garage to see if it maybe rolled under the car. By this time it was past 3 in the morning and I was tired, frustrated, and not entirely coherent. On a whim I decided to check the twin's room one more time, and I finally found the juice. It was in bed with Jonathan, cuddled up next to him underneath his blanket. So, either Troy took the juice out of the fridge and planted it in Jonathan's bed, or there was more night-wandering going on that I didn't even hear. Either way, I was very happy to find the juice still cold, and even happier that Troy went straight back to bed. I don't think I'll ever understand what really happened, or why. Oh well.

What I know about hockey
Anyway, on to the subject at hand. What I know about hockey. Before college, everything I knew about hockey came from watching the Mighty Ducks movies. As awesome as those movies are, (especially number 2, I mean come on!) they don't impart a whole lot of actual knowledge. Then came college.
At Utah State, they didn't have an official school hockey team. They had a club hockey team that was extremely popular. When I was a student there, Logan didn't have an ice rink for the team to practice or play on. So everyone would drive down to Ogden to play on Weber State's ice rink. The hockey team was popular enough that every game would be sold out with students driving from Logan to Odgen, and paying to get into the game. School sponsored sports were free with your student id, but you had to pay to get into hockey games. And it was worth it! I had a friend that played hockey in high school and he came with us and enlightened us all about hockey. Thanks to those experiences I now know the following about hockey:
- I know what icing is
- I know what offsides is
- I know that if a fight breaks out, the ref won't break it up until someone is down on the ice
- I know that if you start a fight with the team's goalie, the whole team will thrash you
- I know that if a player loses a helmet, glove, or if a stick is broken on the ice, it stays on the ice until the next whistle stops play
- I know of two different reasons why a team will pull their goalie in the middle of a game
- And I know that going to a hockey game is a perfect activity for my boys
Steve's company has season tickets to the Grizzlies, and last night we got to use them. It was "kids get in free" night at the hockey game, so we didn't have to buy any additional tickets. It was perfect for my boys. First of all, there was plenty of space. There was only one other person sitting on our row, and nobody in the row in front of us or the row behind us. It was loud, so my boys could be loud also and it didn't bother anybody. Plus, there was never-ending action. Once the puck drops, it's non-stop skating, and shooting, and body-checking. (Another reason my boys liked it.) Kevin got all into it and kept shouting inspiring things like, "Go Grizzlies! You can do it this time! Put the puck in the white team's net!" The other part that they loved was every time the Grizzlies scored, a really loud train horn would sound over the speakers. And you know how my boys love trains. The Grizzlies ended up losing in overtime (we left before that, I looked up the outcome this morning) but it was a fun game.
