Firsts

Well, I had a feeling it was only a matter of time, and now it’s happened. Kevin has a broken arm. Honestly, I can’t believe I haven’t been to the instacare more often. We’ve had plenty of little mishaps but this is the first broken bone.

We were at playgroup, and Kevin was playing on the trampoline with some other 4 and 5-year-old boys. When it was time for them to get off and let someone else have a turn, Kevin was lying on the trampoline crying. I thought he was just upset about having to get off.

He kept crying and told me that his elbow hurt, and that another kid landed on his arm. I gave him some juice and tried to calm him down. That’s when I noticed the big bump on his arm, just above his elbow. Upon consultation with some of the other moms at playgroup, I decided to take him to the instacare. (A big thanks to Erin and Amy for taking care of the twins while I was at instacare!)

The doctor was worried about it as soon as he saw it, since it was so close to the elbow. He said it could be anything from a sprain, to something that would need surgery. After x-rays, he said that it is a small fracture on the bone. (I’m not sure which bone, I should’ve asked to look at the x-ray!) They put him in a splint and a sling and told us to follow up in 5-7 days and get another x-ray to see if it’s healing alright.

The doctor said that he should heal really fast and should be alright with just a few weeks in a splint and a sling. He was very upset with everything they tried to do at the doctor’s office. X-rays, medicine, putting on the splint, popsicles, stickers, a coupon for a free ice cream cone; it all made him very upset. Go figure. But I think the medicine must have worked because he’s feeling much better now that we’re home. I can only hope that his first broken bone (at age 4!) is his only broken bone. I know, wishful thinking.

I broke my arm on the trampoline too, and so I am so nervous about our son doing the same thing. I guess it might be unavoidable though. Both neighbors on either side of our house got trampolines in the last year. I was so annoyed. :) My personal pet peve I suppose.

I swear it wasn't my kid! ;) I broke my arm on a tramp, too! I think it is some kind of rite of passage! He must not have been crying to hard, I didn't even notice, of course, I am quite oblivious sometimes!
