Earlier this month I got a phone call on a Wednesday night. It was someone looking for a substitute clarinet player. They needed someone who could fill in for a community production of "Fiddler on the Roof". I've played in many orchestras before but never that particular one. It sounded interesting. Then they said, "We need someone this Saturday."
What? As in three days from now? So of course, being me and therefore being incapable of saying no, I said, "Sure."
The next day they brought me a copy of the music and that night I went to the dress rehearsal. It was the only rehearsal I got before I played on Saturday night. At the rehearsal I found out that not only was I playing in the orchestra, I was also supposed to be in costume. The clarinet player I was subbing for actually goes up on stage during one part of the musical, and I didn't have to do that but I did have to wear a costume.
When I modelled the costume for Steve, he said, "Look, it's my plural wife!"

It was actually really fun and I think I did pretty well, considering I only had the music for 2 1/2 days. And honestly, wearing a costume while playing in the orchestra is the closest thing to being onstage that I think I'll get. Just because I can do all the correct actions while leading the primary in a rousing rendition of Popcorn Popping, does not mean I'm destined for Broadway. It can't hurt though. And I totally rocked that head scarf, don't you think?

Wow April! You look hot! And I think Popcorn Popping is a precursor to Broadway.
